Round 2 is upon us…now what?
April can feel like a strange in-between moment for families navigating private school admissions. The first round of decisions has come and gone, and for some, the outcome may not have brought the clarity or closure they hoped for. If you find yourself still searching for the right school for your child this fall, it’s important to know: you are far from alone and you are not out of options.
Welcome to “Round 2.”
At this stage, a number of excellent private and boarding schools across the US are actively continuing their admissions process. While initial deadlines have passed, schools are now assessing their enrollment numbers and identifying where they still have space. This could be in specific grade levels, academic programs, or athletic teams. For families, this creates a meaningful window of opportunity.
It’s natural to feel a sense of urgency. Decisions during this period can move quickly, sometimes within days or a couple of weeks. But urgency doesn’t have to mean panic. In fact, this phase can be uniquely advantageous. Admissions teams are often highly responsive right now, eager to connect with families who are genuinely interested and ready to move forward. Your inquiry is not an afterthought, it’s timely and relevant.
So, what should you do next?
First, be proactive. Reach out to schools that interest you and ask directly about availability. Many schools update their websites, but the most accurate information often comes from a conversation with an admissions officer. Be clear, concise, and honest about your situation.
Second, be open-minded. Your initial list of schools may have been narrow, but this is a moment to revisit your priorities. You may discover a school that wasn’t originally on your radar but offers an exceptional fit (academically, socially, or geographically).
Third, have your materials ready. Schools moving in this cycle will expect families to submit transcripts, recommendations, and applications promptly. If you can provide a complete file quickly, it signals seriousness and helps admissions teams make faster decisions. I am assuming you applied to schools during Round 1 through one or more of the common applications (SAO, Gateway, etc). If so, it is a few clicks of a button to get your application out to others.
Finally, remember that finding the “right” school is not about adhering to a rigid timeline. Many students who enroll during this later phase go on to have deeply successful and fulfilling school experiences. What matters most is the match, not the month on the calendar.
If you’re feeling uncertain, that’s completely understandable. But try to reframe this moment not as a setback, but as an extension of the process, one that still holds real possibility. Schools are still building their communities. They are still looking for students who will contribute, grow, and thrive.
And your child may be exactly who they’re hoping to find.
Over the next few weeks, things will move quickly. With clarity, preparation, and a willingness to engage, you can move confidently too. The door isn’t closing. In many ways, it’s simply opening a second time.
